M-W named Scholar-Athlete School of Excellence

The New York State Public High School Athletic Association, Inc. (NYSPHSAA) has announced that Monroe-Woodbury Central School District was among the 2016-17 Scholar-Athlete School of Excellence winners. New this year, schools earned the School of Excellence award by having 75 percent of its varsity teams qualify for and receive the Scholar-Athlete team award during their respective sports seasons. Scholar-Athlete teams require 75 percent of the team’s rosters grade point average be 90.00 or above. Monroe-Woodbury was the only Section IX team to be recognized in this way.

The following teams earned Monroe-Woodbury recognition as a School of Excellence:

  • Cheerleading
  • Cross Country (Boys & Girls)
  • Football
  • Golf ( Boys & Girls)
  • Ice Hockey 
  • Lacrosse (Girls)
  • Skiing ( Boys & Girls)
  • Soccer ( Boys & Girls)
  • Softball
  • Swimming ( Boys & Girls)
  • Tennis ( Boys & Girls)
  • Indoor Track ( Boys & Girls)
  • Outdoor Track ( Boys & Girls)
  • Volleyball

“Monroe-Woodbury athletes are so much more than just the teammates we see playing their heart out on the field, ice rink, track or court. They are hard working students, committed to doing their best in the classroom and out, who grow and learn with guidance from our amazing coaches and teachers. They dedicate time and effort to community service, because they recognize the importance of giving back. I am very proud of our student athletes, coaches and teachers, and congratulate them on this well earned recognition,” said M-W Athletic Director Lori Hock.

According to NYSPHSAA, the purpose of the “School of Distinction” and “School of Excellence” award is to unite varsity coaches in challenging their teams to achieve a statewide honor.  NYSPHSAA’s Scholar-Athlete team award was initiated in the 1991-1992 school year. The School of Distinction award, established in 2002-03 and the School of Excellence award, established this year, are sponsored by Pupil Benefits Plan.
