  • Scoliosis Screenings
It is mandated by New York State that all middle school students be screened for scoliosis. This year the screening will take place when your child is participating in the swimming unit during physical education class. This will enable us to screen students easily in their swimsuits.
  • Physical Exams
It is mandated by New York State that all Seventh graders and new entrants are required to have a physical.  Seventh Grade physicals may be done on or after September 1, 2009.  A school physical will be done if a private physician's physical is not provided by November 1, 2010. The school physician will be here March 1st and all students without a mandated physical on file will have a physical at that time.
  • Vision, Hearing and Scoliosis Screening
Students are screened in school for Vision, Hearing, and Scoliosis according to New York State Mandates. Parents/Guardians will be notified of any findings requiring further testing by their private practitioner. State Mandates for these screenings are as follows:

Weight Status Category Reporting – New State Law

A recent change to the New York State Education Law requires BMI and weight status category be included as part of the student’s school health examination. The New York State Department of Health has notified schools and local doctors of this change. Physical examinations have always included height and weight measurements. Now doctors use this information to determine the student’s BMI and the weight status category. This helps doctors and nurses to know if a student’s weight is in a healthy range or is too high or too low. Monroe Woodbury Central School District has been selected by the New York State Department of Health to take part in a survey reporting information about our students’ weight status groups. The purpose of the survey is to help health officials develop programs that make it easier for children to be healthier.

The information will be gathered from the required physicals provided by your physician or from physicals completed in school for students in kindergarten and grades 2, 4, 7 and 10. Only summary information will be provided to the State. No student name or other identifying information will be sent.

However, you may choose to have your child’s information excluded from this survey report. If you do not wish your child’s weight status group information included as part of the Health Department’s survey this year, please indicate this in writing to your child’s School Nurse by October 1st of this school year. If you need further information regarding this survey please feel free to call your child’s health office to speak with the School Nurse.
