USDA announces national chicken product recall

on May 3, 2016

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has announced that the Pilgrim’s Pride Corporation is recalling more than 4.5 million pounds of fully cooked chicken products, including chicken patties and chicken nuggets, due to possible contamination. According to the USDA website, the recalled chicken products may be contaminated with extraneous materials such as plastic, wood, rubber and metal.

The Monroe-Woodbury Food Services Department cannot be certain whether any of the recalled items were served in the cafeterias; however, it has been confirmed that Pilgrim’s Pride Corporation chicken products have been served during this school year prior to the recall. Once notified, the Food Services Department immediately removed all Pilgrim’s Pride products from its cafeterias as a preventative measure.

The USDA reports that there have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products. At this time, none of our students and staff have reported finding any foreign objects in chicken patties or chicken nuggets. There have also been no reported illnesses.
