This course is open to those students who have successfully completed Latin I and II. Translation and reading comprehension skills are emphasized. The reading content focuses on mythological stories and on the events and personalities of the late Roman Republic. The course also includes intensive vocabulary and grammar review. Students will complete all topics in Checkpoint B of the New York State Syllabus.
Specific areas stressed in this course are translation from original Latin into English, the review of Latin grammar, Latin sentence structure, Latin vocabulary and English derivatives, and the culture of the ancient Romans.
At the successful completion of Latin III, many students continue with Latin IV and Latin V, courses focusing on poetry and prose, which can be taken for SUNY-Albany credit.
