Earth Day Quilt made from your pillowcases

We cannot always build the future for our youth, but we can build our youth for the future! "

If April Showers Bring May Flowers...What do MayFlowers Bring?

Why Pilgrims of course!!

April is a great month here!! It's a month when our senses really get a workout! We  try to take notice of and have an appreciation the new life that is awakening around us  here! I l use this time to help the kids explore the environment using our senses!  This leads into our study of poetry!  The kids will not only be reading new poetry but become poets themselves.  We will be writing and learning about many different types of poems!  It is also a great lead-in for our water conservation unit as well!  Ask the kids about two of our new favorite songs, "Someone's Gonna Use it After You!" and "R-E-C-Y-C -L-E"  The singer, Tom Chapin cares so much for our Earth and so will we!  This month, we spend a great deal of time talking about our Earth and what we can do as a class to keep it BEAUTIFUL! We'll be working on an Earth Day quilt with your recycled pillow cases and learning about lots of ways which first graders can help protect out planet.

One of the most beautiful things I see on Earth are  butterflies. April finds us  talking about animals that go through metamorphosis such as butterflies.  We'll be learning all about butterflies and their life cycle.

As you can see, your little ones are growing and morphing much like the butterflies! This time of year not only brings new life in animals, but in the children as students as well. I love to watch them take all they have learned throughout the year and show it through reading, writing and performing!  I am sure you'll agree with me in that they've come so far and we're going full steam ahead in the last few months of the year!

If you pass by our room, you may notice the kids transforming into some other animals as our rehearsals for "Aesop's Fables" moves into high gear. We'll be giving out parts and working on lines. Keep an eye out for an letter requesting supplies so we can make costumes to literally turn them into their characters. We'll be sending out another letter requesting volunteers to help us with that as the date gets closer.

Fun, fun, fun!!!
