2018 M-W HS valedictorian/salutatorian announced

Congrats to Valedictorian Kathleen Riegner (left) and Salutatorian Shannon Hiner.Congratulations to Kathleen Riegner, valedictorian of the Monroe-Woodbury High School Class of 2018, and Shannon Hiner, salutatorian of the Class of 2018.

Riegner will be attending Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, New Jersey and will major in chemical engineering. She has been a member of the varsity volleyball team for three years, has served as the captain for two years and was named to the Varsity 845 All Star Team.

Riegner has participated in the Leadership, Empowerment, Advocacy, Dedication (LEAD) Program, and is an active member of the Interact Club. She is a member of the National Honor Society and the Spanish National Honor Society.  In addition, Riegner serves as treasurer of a local Student’s for Life group and volunteers at the Craigville Bible Church as a nursery worker, children’s church teacher and a worship leader.

Shannon Hiner will be attending the Honors College at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. She received the Rutgers University Presidential Scholarship and plans to major in biotechnology. She is a member of the Interact Club; LEAD Program; and serves as secretary of STARS, a club that creates and shares valuable health lessons with other students. Hiner plays the flute in the wind ensemble and is a member of the National Honor Society and the French Honor Society. In addition, she was a member of the varsity volleyball team and was named to the Varsity 845 All Star Teams junior and senior year.

“These two hard working students have accomplished so much and have taken advantage of all that Monroe-Woodbury has to offer,” said Superintendent of Schools Elsie Rodriguez. “We’re so proud of them and look forward to seeing how they make their mark on the world.”
