Princess and autism awareness image

"Don't judge a book by its cover."

What a beautiful message of compassion and understanding from a sister, sharing her story about living with her brother who has Autism.  Pine Tree fourth grader Princess shared her  heartfelt message of love with classmates, the Pine Tree family and now, the entire school community via video. She shared her message during morning announcements and, with her teacher, Kristina Basil, Princess visited a third grade classroom to share her thoughts.

Monroe-Woodbury's Special Education Parent Teacher Association (SEPTA) President Berny Vega presented Princess with an "Autism Awareness Ally" certificate in recognition of her efforts to raise awareness for autism throughout our schools.

Thank you, Princess, for sharing your story and your warm and beautiful heart.

Princess' message

My name is Princess Cintron and my brother Adonis has Autism. I love that he is different from other people. He makes my day better. He hugs me. I like to spend time with him… sometimes because he gets a little bit annoying just like all brothers. We both like to go on the swings and play on our tablets. He has a lot of big feelings and he can be sensitive. He needs a lot of help.

Autism is a disability that some kids have. It's ok to have Autism. It means that you are different from other people. Some famous people have Autism. Some kids with Autism have senses that are different from ours. Like when they hear things it might be too loud for them. Some kids with Autism move their hands around. Some don't talk, but tablets help them communicate. You need to be careful what you say because people with Autism may get more upset than you and me. There are some coping tools for everyone, but kids with Autism use them a little bit more. For example, kids with Autism sometimes wear a vest. April is Autism Awareness Month. The color of Autism Awareness Month is blue. The puzzle piece is the symbol for Autism and it shows that one piece is different. Remember, being different means you are unique! Be kind to people with Autism and don’t judge a book by its cover.
