Drive up graduation/parade update – June 20

on June 22, 2020

Good Afternoon Monroe-Woodbury Class of 2020 and Families,

I hope that you and your families are continuing to do well.

As we plan for next week’s Drive-Up Graduation, we are all still holding out hope for a traditional graduation ceremony on July 31, 2020. Please see below for more details on the Drive-Up Graduation and the Senior Car Parade.

Drive-Up Graduation:

On June 22, 23 and 25, the event will occur from 4 – 8 PM, while on June 24 it will take place from 12 – 4 PM. The reason for the earlier start time on June 24 is due to our Senior Car Parade that will begin at 6 PM.

The drive-up graduation will provide graduates and their families the opportunity to partake in some of the traditional elements that exist in a full graduation ceremony. Specifically, while wearing their cap and gown, graduates will be able to receive their diploma, have their name announced, walk across the stage, and have an individual photo and a family photo taken by Island Photography. Parents and guardians will also be able to video record/take photos during this time. Any individual in attendance must wear a mask or face covering. Seniors may remove their masks or face coverings while crossing the stage or having their individual photo taken by the school.

There will be two stages set up in front of the high school in the bus parking lot. Using pickAtime, you should have selected a 15-minute block for either stage 1 or 2 in which graduates and those who reside in their home can come and see the graduate walk across the stage.

To help you with your planning, any graduate on Stage 1 will enter through the Middle School, and any graduate on Stage 2 will enter through Central Valley Elementary School and proceed up the new access road to the high school. We will have clear signage for those who will be on stage 2. We will be allowing two vehicles per family to allow all members of a household to attend.

Those going to Stage 1 will park in the “Senior Lot” and Stage 2 will be in the “Drop Off Lot.” Once there, graduates and family members will be given further direction about line up procedures for graduates and family members. Students will line up and be announced in the order that they are listed in pickAtime.

The event will be held rain or shine. We will only cancel in the event of thunder/lightning. We will be using June 26, 2020 as a severe weather make-up date.

We ask that you arrive at the campus 10 minutes before your scheduled time.

Throughout the event we will be adhering to the social distancing guidelines mandated by local and state officials. With this in mind, restrooms will not be available and there will be no refreshments. Again, all in attendance will need to be wearing masks as we want to ensure the overall health and safety of those in attendance.

If you do not have access to a car or require special assistance in any way, please contact Kathy Lahm at 460-7000 or email [email protected]

On your scheduled day, please do not attend if anyone is displaying symptoms consistent with COVID-19, has tested positive for COVID-19 within the last 14 days, or within the last 14 days was in close or proximate contact of an individual who had symptoms of COVID-19 or has tested positive for COVID-19.

Information about the car paradeSenior Car Parade:

The Car Parade will start at Pine Tree Elementary School with some of our seniors and their families staging in the Pine Tree Parking Lot and others on the surrounding streets. We suggest that everyone arrive no later than 5:40 PM.

The Car Parade will process down Pine Tree Road to the traffic light at Still Road, where we will turn right. We will continue on Still Road, cross 17M, and then will continue on until making a right onto Nininger Road We will then make the left onto Dunderberg. Next, we will continue through the Middle School Lot, Pass the High School, use the access road to go by Central Valley Elementary, return back up the access road and use the main exit from the High School to end the procession.

Our expectation is that seniors will be passengers in the cars and parents/guardians will be driving. This will provide our seniors the opportunity to wave to the spectators. We encourage seniors and their families to decorate their car and show their Class of 2020 spirit.

Those students whose last names begin with letters A – G will park in the Pine Tree lot. Students whose last names begin with letters H-Z will be directed by Monroe Police to park along Winchester Drive. You will need to face Pine Tree Road. If other roads are needed, Monroe Police will direct cars to those locations.

The Monroe Police Department has requested that I remind everyone that passengers are not to be in the beds of pickup trucks or standing up in the car to be seen through sun/moon roofs.

While we are staging for the Car Parade, we will be adhering to the social distancing guidelines mandated by local and state officials. With this in mind, restrooms will not be available and there will be no refreshments. Anyone outside their car while waiting for the Car Parade to start will need to be wearing masks as we want to ensure the overall health and safety of those in attendance.

The High School Staff and I look forward to seeing you next week.

Sincerely,
John S. Kaste
