M-W HS launches inaugural Tri-M Music Honor Society Chapter

Tri-M Music Honor Society logoThe Monroe-Woodbury High School Music Department is introducing the district’s first-ever Tri-M Music Honor Society. Tri-M stands for Modern Music Makers and is an international music honor society founded in 1952, with more than 2,100 chapters and more than 84,000 student members throughout the country and around the globe. It is designed to recognize exceptional music students who meet the music, academic and character criteria as recommended by the National Association for Music Education.

Tri-M is composed of junior and senior students enrolled in music classes at Monroe-Woodbury High School who also participate in additional music ensembles and demonstrate high academic achievement. The faculty advisors are Ms. Lauren Buono and Dr. David Crone.

Students must meet the following criteria to be considered for admission into Tri-M:

  1. Student must be a Junior or Senior at Monroe-Woodbury High School.
  2. Student must be a good standing member of a MWHS performance ensemble (band, choir or orchestra)
  3. Students must have successfully completed a NYSSMA solo in their high school career with a minimum score of 21 for level 4, and 90 for level 5 and 6.
  4. Participation in All-County ensembles is strongly encouraged.  
  5. Participation in community instrumental or choral ensembles is strongly encouraged.
  6. Student must maintain a “97%” or higher in all of their music classes and a “93%” or higher overall average during the current school year.  
  7. Character Strength: Student must be of excellent character and exhibit a positive attitude; take a leadership role in the music program; and be a good role model for other students.
  8. As a member of this chapter of the Tri-M Music Honor Society, the student agrees to help as needed at MWHS music events and fundraisers.

Students must download and complete the Tri-M Application for acceptance by Wednesday, March 20, 2019. The application should be dropped off at Room 286A or Room 273A.  Students who wish to be considered for an officer position in Tri-M must also complete a Tri-M Officer Application by March 20, 2019.

Acceptance letters will be mailed to students on Monday, March 25. The first meeting of the Monroe-Woodbury High School Tri-M Music Honor Society will be held on Wednesday, April 3 @ 2 p.m. Students must bring signed paperwork and dues to this meeting. An Induction Ceremony will be held on Thursday, April 11 @ 2:30 p.m., with a reception t0 follow.
