Message regarding off season workouts for interscholastic athletics

on October 26, 2020

Athletics headerYou may have seen some of our student athletes and coaches conducting workouts on our fields this past week. I have been receiving several inquiries from families and want to clarify some key points related to M-W athletics.

We are very fortunate to have been granted permission to conduct off season workouts on our campus. To successfully and safely achieve this, we have created and implemented a reopening plan for our athletes and coaches that includes strict safety protocols. Although these workouts are limited and currently restricted to outdoor facilities, they serve a great purpose in providing a small step toward regaining a sense of normalcy.

These are difficult and disappointing times and I recognize the significant social-emotional toll many of you are feeling as a result of the delay of organized sports. With that in mind, we cautiously and successfully moved forward this week with our first sessions of offseason workouts. Please understand that these workouts are voluntary and optional for both students and coaches as they fall outside of the parameters of any interscholastic season. There will be some teams/programs conducting sessions, while others will not.

Although many of our children have been participating in community and travel programs, public school districts must comply with much more stringent regulations for athletic participation. Monroe-Woodbury will adhere to these guidelines without exception. Similar to the phased-in approach the school district took to the reopening of school buildings, athletic activities will be implemented incrementally to allow for ongoing assessments and adjustments. Please be assured that we will continue to present additional opportunities for our athletes as long as our students and staff remain healthy and participants are compliant.

We look forward to partnering with you in our efforts to support all M-W student athletes. Please continue to be patient as we move forward together during these uncertain times. Our goals are the same – to see our student athletes competing with the zeal and fervor we are so used to seeing in our Monroe-Woodbury athletes.

Sincerely,

Lori Hock
M-W Director of Athletics
