Message from Superintendent letterhead

November 19, 2020

Dear Monroe-Woodbury families,

The school district has learned many important lessons since the school buildings reopened in October. Our families have demonstrated patience and resilience in the face of frequent adjustments to schedules. Students and staff have been diligent in their adherence to safety and health protocols within our schools. I am very proud of all that we have accomplished together.

As the public health crisis continues to take center stage throughout the country and in our own community, the Orange County Health Department has shared urgent guidance regarding in-person student instruction in the upcoming months. Dr. Irina Gelman, Orange County Health Commissioner, strongly recommends that school districts revert to remote instruction for extended periods this fall and winter as a preventative measure to help keep the COVID infection rate down.

Since the inception of this pandemic, I have relied upon guidance from our local health experts and will continue to do so. The Monroe-Woodbury Board of Education and the district leadership team have carefully considered Dr. Gelman’s recommendations and will revert to remote instruction for two weeks following both Thanksgiving Recess and Winter Recess.

Please see below for an overview of the student calendar for November 2020 – January 2021:

  • Monday, November 30 through Friday, December 11 (following Thanksgiving Recess) – remote instruction for all students. Building schedules will be shared soon.
  • December 14 through December 23 – in-person hybrid instruction
  • Thursday, December 24, 2020 through Friday, January 1, 2021 – schools closed for Winter Recess
  • Monday, January 4 through Friday, January 15 (following Winter Recess) – remote instruction for all students
  • Monday, January 18 – schools and offices closed in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
  • Tuesday, January 19 – hybrid students return to buildings

I have attached calendars for your reference. Please note that additional schedule changes may be necessary if further directives come from the state level.

Please notify your building principal if you prefer your hybrid student to remain fully remote for the entire period between Thanksgiving and January 19, 2021. Families do not need to commit to this change for the entire semester/trimester.
When we look back at the 2020-2021 school year, my hope is that moments such as these will be defined by Monroe-Woodbury’s resilience and strength.

Wishing you and your loved ones a very Happy Thanksgiving.

Warm regards,

Elsie Rodriguez
