Grade 7 Decorators create Bake-Off Cakes

on November 17, 2021

It’s not exactly ‘The Great British Bake-Off”, but Grade 7 Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS) students worked hard preparing their version of the contest – minus the prize, of course!

The 7th grade FACS curriculum includes a unit on recipe reading, kitchen safety and sanitation. Students practiced what they learned over several days in the kitchens, working independently in groups, to make frosting, bake cakes (from scratch!), crumb coat and decorate them. Each group then had to recreate a design demonstrated by FACS Teacher Mrs. Rickli. They were allowed 10 minutes to decorate their cakes, and then an extra 5 minutes to create their own pattern design for the cake stands.

The competition was intense as the judges arrived to choose 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners at the end of every class period. The cakes were judged on how closely the decoration matched Mrs. Rickli’s sample, as well as the creativity of the pattern on the stand. Volunteering to judge throughout the day were: Mrs. Lerner, Mr. Hughes, Mr. DiGiovanni, Mrs Pelcin, Mrs. Hassler, Ms. Hawxhurst and Mrs. Segall. Regardless of the results, it’s clear a great time was had by all!
