MWHS Kids Changing the World Club holds “Hats for Hope” drive for cancer patients

on November 22, 2021

The Kids Changing the World Club invites members of the M-W school community to drop off a new hat (with tags, in a ziplock bag please) at drop boxes located at the HS and Education Center. All donated hats will be distributed to cancer patients to help keep them warm during the cold winter months to come. Find a drop off box located in any of the High School House Offices labeled Hats for Hope and drop off a new hat with tags ( in a ziplock bag please! ) for a cancer patient this winter!

Hats for Hope was a program started by a remarkable woman, Colleen McCarthy, to offer hats to cancer patients, like her, receiving chemotherapy and other treatments as they fought their battle against cancer. Colleen was a 41- year-old wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt, cousin and friend. After she was diagnosed with Stage 4 Inflammatory Breast Cancer, she found herself watching and getting to know other patients as they were on their journey with this disease. Despite her own illness, she wanted to give something to those fighting alongside her to brighten their day and bring them comfort and warmth. She set up a program called Hats for Hope and gave patients hats as they came in for their treatments or as they left to return to their lives. The hat was given from her heart, but her smile and words of encouragement and hope was the true gift she offered. Colleen passed away in February 2015, but her spirit, compassion and selflessness live on in all she touched.

The Kids Changing the World Club from Monroe Woodbury High School is honored to continue Colleen’s mission to spread kindness, warmth and love.
