FRESHMAN CLASS

All freshmen are automatically members, but those who are interested in working on projects should attend meetings.  Activities include supporting the freshmen class, organizing fundraisers, and providing leadership opportunities for students. Once freshman class officers are elected, we will meet on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month at 2:00 PM in Room 423. There will be additional meetings, as needed, to plan activities.

SOPHOMORE CLASS

Sophomores who want to be involved with class activities should become involved in this club. Activities include supporting the Sophomore Class, providing leadership opportunities and organizing fundraisers to support Junior and Senior year experiences.  Meets 2 times each month on the 2nd and 4th Thursday at 2:00  PM in room 219.  Additional meetings may be necessary to plan events.

JUNIOR CLASS

Aurora Science Club

The Aurora Science Club explores the science behind the environmental issues which impact the students of Monroe-Woodbury. We work to raise awareness and empower students to take meaningful action.  We strive to make the high school, and greater community, a more sustainable place for everyone. Anyone who is interested in environmental advocacy and justice is encouraged to join.

The Aurora Science Club meets biweekly on Thursdays in room 408.

BAKING CLUB

The Baking Club is a new club for the 2023-2024 school year and is open to students in all grades. The purpose of the club is to provide a safe kitchen environment to students who enjoy baking as a hobby and spending time with friends. We will be doing many recipes throughout the year. There are only 24 slots available per meeting and there will be a signup for each meeting. We expect kitchen safety practices to be followed and proper cleanup methods used at the end of each meeting.   If you have any questions, you can reach out to Mrs. Lee or Mrs. Rickli.

BOOK CLUB

Chamber winds will meet weekly to study and rehearse masterworks for “one on a part” ensembles.  We will either perform on or as a prelude to concerts throughout the season.

CHESS CLUB

DEBATE CLUB

Whether you are interested in a career in law, or in politics, and want to hone your skills in public speaking, argumentation, or you are just interested in getting together with other people who like to argue about important issues in society and culture, Debate Club is the right fit for you. Each week we hold practice debates, discuss debate strategy, and engage in research on a variety of topics with the intention of taking our skills on the road for regional competitions in the near future.  The goal is to compete in the spring. We will be having practice debates and fundraising for competitions.

Founded by the American Association of Teachers of French to promote the study of the French language and the culture of its people and to recognize students who have demonstrated a high level of achievement in the study of French.  Special Note: Society members are currently tutoring in the library after school.

FRIENDLY FACES

A program designed to help eighth graders as they become incoming freshmen. Freshman and sophomores will help the younger students with social and academic issues surrounding their transition into high school and become a "friendly face" in the halls. The club members will visit MWMS and facilitate a presentation that introduces curious eighth graders to high school life.

HIP HOP (MWHS DANCE CLUB)

The MWHS Dance Club provides a fun, safe, nurturing atmosphere to cultivate each student’s love for the art of dance, develop each student’s talents, and grow their self-confidence through artistic expression. This is a service organization that is school and community-minded.  There are many exciting projects and opportunities that students may become involved in to earn volunteer/community service hours. The Interact Club is involved in a revolving food drive to donate to the local food pantry, volunteering at Open House, the Mile for Hunger initiative, coordinating “adopting” families for Christmas, letter writing to Valley View Seniors, creating books for K-2, and more.

ITALIAN HONOR SOCIETY

Founded by the American Association of Teachers of Italian to promote the study of the Italian language and the culture of its people, and to recognize students who have demonstrated a high level of achievement in the study of Italian. *Special Note: Society members are currently tutoring freshman-juniors every Wednesday in the library after school.

Meets on the third Thursday of the month from 2:00 PM to 2:45 PM in Room 171 for members. Officers meet once a month on an agreed day after school. Meets every week in April for Induction Ceremony, rehearsals, and for distribution of certificates.

JAZZ ENSEMBLE

The Jazz Ensemble learns and performs music in the jazz and big band idiom. Music selected ranges from the early swing era to contemporary jazz, with a focus on improvisation.  Instrumentation is limited to standard jazz and big band ensembles.  Students must audition to participate. The Jazz Ensemble performs concerts and at selected music festivals.  This is a Co-Curricular class. KIDS CHANGING THE WORLD (KCW)

KCW was formed to help kids learn the value of giving back to their community.  This is a valuable life lesson to learn for each and every one of our students.  We primarily take on projects to help members in our community with medical needs. Past and ongoing projects include raising enough funds to sponsor a local “Wish Kid”, collecting and delivering hats to cancer patients at Garnet Medical Center, and working with special needs kids through the Beautiful People organization.

L.E.A.D. (Leadership, Empowerment, Advocacy, Dedication)

A program designed to ease students’ transition from middle school to high school. The goal is to provide ongoing help and guidance for academic and social success and, ultimately, to create a network of support for the students new to the high school. LEAD mentors facilitate freshman orientation each year just prior to the opening of school. LEAD mentors are chosen through an application process each spring to become mentors in the fall.

MATH TEAM

MOCK TRIAL

Mock Trial is a unique club that allows students to assume the role of a lawyer or a witness in a court case scenario and compete against other schools using only the given facts of the case and narrative-building skills to present the most compelling argument before a real judge. We will work regularly with an actual professional attorney, go over the basics of court proceedings, learn how to effectively read and analyze evidence, work on building effective arguments, and practice on-the-spot thinking.

MODEL U.N.

MU ALPHA THETA (MATH HONOR SOCIETY)

Mu Alpha Theta (Math Honor Society) is for students who excel at mathematics and who wish to explore advanced math topics. Students must meet prerequisite requirements, meet monthly, and will provide service in order to participate in the club. The Math Honor Society offers leadership opportunities, tutoring, and scholarship opportunities.

MULTICULTURAL CLUB

Students in the Multicultural Club have discussions and presentations about other cultures. Our mission is to promote awareness and appreciation of the diverse ethnic cultures worldwide and those found at MWHS. The meetings include a variety of activities such as crafts, music, guest speakers, movies, etc.  Officers will be appointed in October and we plan to create a liaisonship with Spectrum and SRJSU.

NATIONAL ART HONOR SOCIETY (NAHS)

In 1978, the National Art Education Association began the NAHS program to inspire and recognize students who have shown outstanding ability and interest in art. NAHS will help to foster art interest within the school, lead the Art Guild in school murals and service projects and volunteer within the community and school. For high school students in grades 9-12.  Students must maintain a minimum GPA and show success in their art classes.

Meeting dates and times are determined by the President and/or Vice President of the NAHS.

NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY

Students must meet qualifications including: academic, leadership, service and character criteria. Activities include providing tutorial services, volunteering for local community events, assisting with Open House, Parent-Teacher Conferences, and school-wide events.

ODYSSEY OF THE MIND

Odyssey of the Mind (OM) is a group that seeks to solve certain imposed problems within pre-set parameters.  The solutions to these problems are worked out entirely by the students who then meet with groups from other schools to compete to solve the problems before a panel.  The OM team is limited to 7 students. We meet after school and sometimes on weekends especially closer to the competition. The OM Google Classroom code is open to all for general information about the problems we can choose.  If you are interested, make sure to join the Google Classroom to let me know you're interested, and take a look at the problems we have to choose from this year.

OUTDOORS CLUB

Students who appreciate the outdoors will plan and enjoy a variety of outdoor activities. We are open to hiking, biking, and outdoor activities of all kinds! Experienced outdoors adventurers and those who would like to become one are welcome. We will also foster stewardship of the environment and live by the “Leave no Trace” ethic as we enjoy the great outdoors!

We meet Wednesdays as announced in Google Classroom from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM in Room 318. Some outings may be scheduled on the weekend and students will need to arrange their own transportation.  

PENDRAGON

Members of this group publish a literary-art magazine each year that represents the best work of all of the students in the high school. Students interested in magazine production, design, creative writing, or art are encouraged to join the magazine staff. There is a standing Google Classroom where staff members can review prose, poetry, and other written content.  The group then discusses which works will be published, before creating layouts on Adobe InDesign.

PEP BAND

Members of this group develop a high degree of school spirit and camaraderie.  They also perform at various parades, rallies, competitions, and football games.

S.A.D.D.

The mission of this club is to empower young people to successfully confront the risks and pressures that challenge them throughout their daily lives. We will focus on peer to peer education and foster a sense of belonging that promotes resilience, leadership, and advocacy skills so that young people make positive life decisions that will carry them throughout life. SADD is actively involved in assisting in Red Ribbon Week. We coordinate our preparation for service projects such as Red Ribbon Week, Make*A*Wish, Orange County Youth Bureau Adopt a Family and/or holiday gift boxes for veterans/soldiers/seniors. We also plan and facilitate an Impact Panel Assembly for Juniors.

SCIENCE OLYMPIAD

SPANISH HONOR SOCIETY

Founded by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish to promote the study of the Spanish language and the culture of its people and to recognize students who have demonstrated a high level of achievement in the study of Spanish. Some of our activities include officer speeches and elections, Spanish Heritage Month activity, shared cultural experiences with Italian and French Honor Societies, Read Aloud with elementary school, Spring Induction, and Spanish tutoring.

SPECIAL OLYMPICS

Competitions take place against other Special Olympic Athletes from various other counties at West Point in May. Events include relay races, walking relays, wheelchair relays, turbo running, long jump, and shot-put.

SPECTRUM  (Gay-Straight Alliance)

The purpose of this club is to provide a safe space for all students who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, non-binary, queer/questioning, intersex, asexual/aromantic, and all others (LGBTQIA+). The club is a Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) and all high school students are encouraged to join. The club will work throughout the year to raise awareness about issues that impact the LGBTQIA+ community and to promote an atmosphere of pride, acceptance, and respect for all students. Our mission is to offer social opportunities, support, education, and advocacy for marginalized groups.

S.T.A.R.S. (STUDENTS TEACHING ADVOCACY AND RESLIENCE SKILLS)

The mission of STARS is to promote healthy decisions and overall wellness to students in MW. STARS is a peer-education club and members are chosen by an application process. Student members are responsible for researching, planning, and teaching a lesson to learners in grades K-10.

 It is composed of a five member Student Council, and separate governments that represent each class. Students are provided leadership opportunities and input within the school community.

The Treble Choir is an ensemble of singers dedicated to the rehearsal and performance of 2 and 3-part soprano/alto repertoire. The Treble Choir rehearses once a week and performs at the Winter and Spring concerts. The ensemble also competes at the state-level festivals in the spring.

Meets on Tuesdays or Wednesdays from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM in Room 273.

Tri-M stands for Modern Music Makers and is an international music honor society founded in 1952. Tri-M currently has over 2,100 chapters and involves more than 84,000 students throughout the country and around the globe. It is designed to recognize exceptional music students that meet the music, academic and character criteria as recommended by the National Association for Music Education. Tri-M is composed of junior and senior students enrolled in music class at Monroe-Woodbury High School who also participate in additional music ensembles and demonstrate high academic achievement. Monroe-Woodbury High School is fortunate enough to have their own Tri-M chapter, chartered in 2019. Post applications online. All will be submitted electronically. Virtual or in-person meetings.

The Wire News is Monroe-Woodbury’s student news organization. This club gives members the opportunity to be practicing journalists and get published. The Yearbook is a publication that captures many events throughout the school year.  Members of all grades who are hardworking, self-driven to meet deadlines, and open to learning new skills are welcome. We are looking for students with interests in writing, art, photography, business, computer graphics, and Edesign. Some responsibilities include fundraising through the sale of community business ads, completing certain assigned tasks independently during their free time throughout the school day, or maintaining communication with various high school staff. All interested must email the advisors to begin the application process.

Meets Wednesdays from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM in Room 142. Meetings increase to twice a week in January to meet the publication deadline.

YOUTH IN GOVERNMENT

Student-run. For any student interested in current events, government, politics, and/or social issues. Open to all students eager to discuss, debate, and voice their opinions on today’s political issues.  The club also organizes events designed to engage students in political education and activism. We are dedicated to promoting student involvement in politics and increasing civic awareness and action. We work to ensure that all voices amongst students are heard equally. We are a completely non-partisan club and do not support any particular ideology. All political stances are welcome.

Meets every first and third Wednesday of each month at 2:00 PM in Room 237.
