PT student named Ambassador for “Go the Distance Walk”

on April 24, 2017

On Thursday, April 6, second grader Kaylee Fried was officially appointed Ambassador for the “Go the Distance Walk and Family Fun Day” during a memorable ceremony held in her honor at Pine Tree Elementary School. The annual “Go the Distance Walk” supports Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital and will take place on Sunday, May 7, 2017.

During the ceremony, Kaylee and her family members enjoyed music performed by classmates singing the Beatles’ song, All You Need Is Love, conducted by Mrs. Vultaggio. Dr. Ed Lagamma, the Chief of Newborn Medicine and the Director of the Hospital’s Regional Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, served as keynote speaker and presented Kaylee with her official ambassador sash. The assembly was wrapped up with Mr. Barlow, a grade five teacher, and his class who sang their original song entitled, Kaylee’s Song.

Kaylee was born at Good Samaritan Hospital, a member of the WMCHealth, seemingly healthy at only 36 weeks. After a few short hours of observation, she was diagnosed with a rare birth defect in which her stomach and esophagus were not connected. She was transferred to Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital, where surgery was performed to repair the defect. After less than one month of recovery and a small amount of follow-up care over the first few years, Kaylee is doing great, and is now a healthy 7-year-old second grader at Pine Tree Elementary School.

Best wishes to Kaylee and her family!
