Residents to vote on 2021-2022 proposed budget, vehicle purchase and elect BOE members on May 18, 6 a.m. – 9 p.m.

on May 2, 2021

Budget vote announcementsAt a special meeting on Thursday, April 22, the Monroe-Woodbury Board of Education adopted a $188,766,796 proposed budget for the 2021-2022 school year. This budget, which represents a spending increase of $4,6766,888 or 2.59 percent when compared to the 2020-2021 budget, maintains all instructional programming and staffing.

The proposed tax levy, $126,606,025, an increase of $1,871,025 or 1.50 percent when compared to the 2020-2021 budget, is less than the allotted maximum allowable levy of 1.88 percent for 2021-2022. This means that a simple majority of voters (more than 50 percent) is needed to pass the budget. A public hearing regarding the proposed budget will be held on Wednesday, May 5 at 6 p.m. in the auditorium at Monroe-Woodbury High School, 155 Dunderberg Road, Central Valley.

In addition to the proposed budget, district residents will also vote to authorize the purchase of 11 new school vehicles.

Specifically, the proposition asks voters to approve the purchase of four 72-passenger school buses, six 35-passenger school bus vans, and one wheelchair accessible school bus van as part of the district’s replacement plan. The total cost is not to exceed $1,048,367 and state aid would cover approximately 67 percent of the expense. The district would be reimbursed over a five-year period.

Residents will also elect four members to the Board of Education. Typically three terms expire each year on the Monroe-Woodbury Central School District Board of Education, creating three available positions. However, due to two positions being vacated prior the term’s end, four positions are available in May 2021. The positions are as follows:

  • Two (2) members of the Board of Education, to be elected for the term of three (3) years beginning on July 1, 2021 and ending June 30, 2024.
  • One (1) member of the Board of Education, to fill the balance of an unexpired term beginning on May 18, 2021 and ending on June 30, 2024.
  • One (1) member of the Board of Education, to fill the balance of an unexpired term beginning on May 18, 2021 and ending on June 30, 2022.
