Superintendent message regarding Universal Pre-kindergarten program

Message from Superintendent letterhead

May 14, 2021

Dear Monroe-Woodbury families,

I am writing to share information following the recent announcement that Monroe-Woodbury could be receiving $2.6 million in state funding for the development of a Universal Pre-kindergarten (UPK) program.

According to state directives, the school district may allocate the funds in one of two ways:

  1. Offer an in-house UPK program
  2. Contract with private preschool programs

Based on many factors including staffing, classroom space and other logistics, it is not feasible for a school district the size of M-W to research, develop and begin operation of a comprehensive program in time for the start of the 2021-2022 school year. Instead, we are hoping to partner with eligible UPK programs throughout the district.

NYS has identified the following criteria for eligible UPK programs. The program must be offered:

  • five days a week
  • five hours per day
  • 180 days total (school year)

The school district will reach out to potential eligible UPK providers in the weeks ahead. Additional information will be provided as we learn more and seek clarification from the state.

Warm regards,

Elsie Rodriguez
Superintendent of Schools
