Pep Rally celebrates M-W Unified Basketball team

on April 29, 2018

The M-W Unified Basketball team kicked off its second season with a large crowd cheering them on! Members of the M-W community clapped and cheered as the athletes were introduced, cheerleaders performed and the athletes participated in an intra-squad scrimmage. Our high school Special Olympians were also recognized and the district presented a donation to a representative from Special Olympics New York.

Unified Basketball pairs special education athletes with playing partners. Basketball is one of the Project UNIFY offerings in the partnership between the New York State Public High School Athletic Association and Special Olympics New York. It is recognized as a varsity sport at Monroe-Woodbury and five other Section 9 schools.

The M-W team is coached by M-W HIgh School teacher Anthony Verboys. He is assisted by varsity player Melissa Alifano and M-W High School teacher Tricia Allen, who serves as advisor to the Youth Activation Committee (YAC). Monroe-Woodbury’s YAC consists of high school students who “empower other youth to encourage the next generation to be inclusive of people with and without intellectual disabilities, and not exclusive.” (Source: Danielle Liebl, Special Olympics Athlete and National Youth Activation Committee member.)

Let’s go, Crusaders!
