Dear Monroe-Woodbury families,

I am writing to share next steps related to the state funding Monroe-Woodbury will be receiving for the development of a Universal Pre-kindergarten (UPK) program.

As a reminder, New York State has identified the following criteria for eligible UPK programs:

  • Services must be offered five days a week.
  • Services must be offered (at least) five hours per day.
  • Services must be offered 180 days total (school year)

The school district is currently developing a Request for Proposals (RFP) for local state-approved providers, which will be released in early July 2021.

Once proposals from eligible, state-approved providers are submitted, the district will carefully consider the submissions and award contracts by late July 2021. We will then share how many student spots are available and how the lottery system will work for district residents.

In addition to partnering with local providers, Monroe-Woodbury will pilot an in-house UPK program at Sapphire Elementary School in Harriman. To start we will offer two classrooms of up to 18 students each, which will be taught by certified UPK teachers.

If you are a district resident and are interested in having your child’s name placed in the lottery, please send an email to [email protected].

We are excited to introduce this new program offering for our M-W families. More information will be forthcoming.

Warm regards,

Elsie Rodriguez
Superintendent of Schools
