June 30, 2020 – Update regarding public use of athletic facilities

Dear members of the Monroe-Woodbury community,

While we all continue to navigate our way through these unsettling times, I want to thank you for your continued patience and understanding. Things have been difficult, especially for our students, and we look forward to the day when we are able to return to some sense of normalcy. In the meantime, we continue to follow guidelines from the state and federal levels and do all that we can to ensure the safety and good health of our community.

We are pleased to announce that both the tennis courts and the much-anticipated track are open for public use, with social distancing in effect. Please note that the track will be open for individual exercise or training purposes only. Groups will not be allowed due to existing social distancing mandates.

We have been receiving several questions about why the athletic facilities continue to be closed for public use. Per directives from Governor Cuomo, schools are not permitted to fully open facilities to the general public until we enter Phase IV of reopening, which is anticipated to be in mid-July. As you know, things change daily as it relates to COVID-19, but we are hopeful that Phase IV will begin as planned.

Therefore, the athletic fields will remain closed until restrictions have been lifted at the start of Phase IV reopening. As we prepare for this next step, I will be in touch with details regarding a virtual informational session for those individuals interested in requesting field time. Per district policy, only teams/groups/individuals who have secured a permit will have access to the fields. The scheduling process will begin after the informational session is held.

We are grateful to everyone in the M-W community for your continued support. Stay safe and be well.

Sincerely,

Lori Hock
Director of Athletics

Athletic fields closed for public use

Spring 2020

The Monroe-Woodbury Central School District is committed to the safety of our community members and the protection of our residents’ investment in the updated outdoor athletic facilities. We are reminding community members that all outdoor and indoor athletic facilities are closed for public use.

Please note that the tennis courts are available to the public as of June 1. Residents are requested to please exercise social distancing on the courts.

The fields located on the M-W High School campus remain an active construction zone. Work will continue on the running track in the spring. Once completed, the track will be open for public use. Please stay tuned for updates!

Individuals, groups, teams or organizations interested in utilizing district facilities must complete an application, gain district approval and secure a permit. School sanctioned teams, organizations and physical education classes will be utilizing the fields under the supervision of a coach, teacher or advisor. District security will be monitoring the facilities at all times.

The access roads located near the fields are reserved for construction and school vehicles only. Thank you for your adherence to this rule.

The M-W community put their faith in the school district in 2018 when they overwhelmingly approved the capital project. Our goal is to maintain the state-of-the-art facilities for years to come.

If you have any questions related to the facilities usage, please visit the Use of Facilities page on the district website. Additional questions may be addressed to [email protected].

Thank you for your continuous cooperation and patience!

This program is available to all Monroe-Woodbury seventh and eighth grade students.

Is there “cutting” in Modified Sports?

The goal of Modified Athletics is maximum participation. However, there are times that the number of students trying out exceeds our coaching staff’s ability to safely supervise and instruct. In this situation, reducing team size may be necessary.

What type of time commitment is involved in Modified Sports?

Team practices are usually held five days a week. It is the expectation that students attend every practice. Practice sessions begin immediately after school and students are released in time to ride the 5:00 pm late bus. Please note that there is no 5:00 pm bus on Fridays. Furthermore, on days of competitions, students will participate later than 5:00 pm. Parents or guardians are responsible for transportation on those days.

When does each season begin?

The fall season begins on September 2, 2020 (first day of school)
The winter season begins November 23, 2020
The spring season begins March 22, 2021

What steps need to be taken in order to be eligible to participate?

To participate in a Monroe-Woodbury Interscholastic team at the Modified, Junior Varsity or Varsity level, each student must have a physical exam within the last 12 months on file in the Health Office. The following documents are also required:

  • Parent/Guardian Sports Permission/Medical Update
  • NY Student Physical Exam Form
  • Interscholastic Sports Parent/Student Agreement (Code of Conduct)

All forms can be found on our school website: https://www.mw.k12.ny.us/forms/#athletics-docs

Each team will have an interest meeting for prospective athletes prior to the start of the season. It is important for students to stay up to date on the daily information communicated via middle school announcements. Should your child make the team, a parent meeting will be held and sport specific information will be shared by the coaches.

What is Selection Classification (APP)?

The Advanced Placement Process is used to determine a student-athlete’s readiness to compete at a higher level of competition. The purpose of this program is to permit the accelerated student-athlete the opportunity to participate safely at a higher level of competition (high school team). In order for a 7th or 8th grader to try out for a high school team at Monroe-Woodbury, the student must first be recommended by the head coach of the program. In making this recommendation, we not only assess the athlete’s skill development but his/her social-emotional maturity level as well. If approved for the APP process, the student will undergo a maturity screening and a physical fitness test to determine if he/she is eligible to try out.

At Monroe-Woodbury we make every effort to have middle school students participate at the Modified level whenever possible. Since the middle school day ends an hour later than the high school, having 7th and 8th graders on high school teams presents logistical difficulties.
