Winter Athletics set to begin on Tuesday, Jan. 19

Reminder: Register by January 19; low/moderate risk sports will begin on Jan. 19, high risk sports will begin practicing during the week of Jan. 25

The school district is looking forward to welcoming our student athletes on January 19 for the start of the winter sports season. Thorough plans are in place and our winter season is only a few weeks away. Please read this communication in its entirety as important information for students and families is included below.

As you may be aware, students in grades 7-12 are typically eligible to participate in the district’s interscholastic athletics program. Just as we have done with the entire educational experience this year, modifications have been made to athletics to ensure the safety of our students and staff.

Our goal is to provide students with a meaningful opportunity to participate in athletics. We recognize the importance of students’ social and emotional well being and intend to do everything in our power to engage students in appropriate in-person extracurricular activities.

These Low / Moderate Risk sports teams have been approved for both practices and competitions:

  • Boys Swimming & Diving – Varsity
  • Boys and Girls Bowling – Varsity
  • Boys and Girls Indoor Track & Field – Varsity
  • Boys and Girls Alpine Skiing – Varsity

These High Risk sports teams have been approved for practices only:

  • Cheerleading – Varsity, JV, and Modified
  • Ice Hockey – Varsity
  • Boys and Girls Basketball – Varsity, JV and Modified
  • Wrestling – Varsity, JV and Modified

Although the governor has not yet approved high risk sports for competition, we are still able to provide an opportunity for athletes to participate in practice sessions with the hopes of competing by the end of the season.

Important Dates & Information

  • All low and moderate risk sports will begin practicing on Tuesday, January 19.
  • All high risk sports teams will begin practicing during the week of January 25.
  • At this time, high risk sports programs may conduct conditioning and non-contact workouts only.
  • Hybrid students, as well as fully remote students, may attend practices and competitions on any given day.
  • Families will need to arrange for transportation for their student athlete to and from practice as we will not have late buses this winter season.
  • Coaches have been trained in appropriate protocol relating to COVID safety.
  • All COVID safety protocols set forth by NYSDOH, NYSPHSAA, Section IX and the Monroe-Woodbury Central School District will be followed.
  • Depending on the sport and enrollment, we may implement staggered schedules and limit the number of students in attendance on a given day.

There are two things that need to be done in order for your child to participate in Monroe-Woodbury’s athletic program this winter:

  • Your child must join the Google Classroom for the chosen sport. Codes are posted on the Athletics page of the district website. This virtual classroom is the best place for you and your child to get the most up-to-date information regarding the team and provides a direct link to the team’s coaching staff.
  • It is important for parents to register their child in our online registration program so coaches may start planning practices and schedules based on the anticipated number of participants. The link is provided here: If at all possible please use a computer rather than a phone when registering with this program.

All members of the M-W coaching staff are very excited to get this sports season underway. If you have any questions, please contact Athletic Director Lori Hock at [email protected].
