This October Mr. Amanatides and Mr. Fosstveit have welcomed ~ 200 Brown trout (Salmo trutta) eggs into their classroom for the year.

This program is made possible through The New York State Council of Trout Unlimited and NYS Department of Environmental Conservation. Students will spend the fall and winter raising trout from eggs to fingerlings. Students closely monitor water temperature, water clarity, dissolved oxygen, ammonia levels and pH to ensure the trout’s survival. Students will experience the connections between trout, water resources, the environment, and themselves. The trout will be released into the wild in the spring months.

Mr. Amanatides, Mr. Fosstveit and Mr. Ahearn recently attended the annual Trout in the Classroom Fall Teacher Conference at the Sharpe Reservation. The focus of the day was “A Healthy Watershed: Habitats and Humans”. They attended classes on Trout Care & Tank Maintenance, Modeling Watersheds and Robots designed using biomimicry to clean water pollution. They attended a resource fair and networked with teachers throughout the Hudson Valley, from Albany to Staten Island.

Stay tuned for updates!
