valery canales 2026-2027 student representative

Q: How many years have you been going to school in M-W?
A: I have been a student in the Monroe-Woodbury Central School District for almost five years. After moving to the district in the 7th grade, my time here has been an incredible experience that has challenged me to grow academically, personally, and as a leader.

Q: What is your favorite subject in school?
A: My favorite subject is U.S. History. Studying history allows me to analyze systemic patterns and understand the social movements that have shaped our current society. It gives me a deeper appreciation for the progress we have made and a clearer framework for how to advocate for positive change today.

Q: What extracurricular activities/sports/organizations are you involved in?
A: I maintain a well-rounded balance between school spirit, athletics, and public service. Athletically, I compete on a travel volleyball team and run track for our school. In school, I serve as the Secretary for the SADD club, am a dedicated member of the Yearbook staff, and participate in the LEAD club. Outside of school, I am highly involved in local government and civic leadership, serving as an intern and former program participant with State Senator Skoufis’s team. Additionally, I work closely with non-profit organizations, which has allowed me to help host pre-college programs at Vassar College and participate in a city-based grant research initiative to pitch community driven policy solutions.

Q: How do you view the role of BOE Student Representative?
A:  I view the role as a professional bridge and an active line of communication between the student body and district leadership. It is not just about having a seat at the table; it is about actively listening to the diverse backgrounds of our student body and translating their real-world needs, safety concerns, and ideas into actionable policy discussions. A great representative ensures that administration decisions are informed by the authentic day-to-day experiences of the students they serve.

Q: What do you hope to accomplish next year as Student BOE Representative?
A: My top priority is to champion resource equity and a secure learning environment for every student. Next year, I hope to collaborate with the board to propose clear safety policy resolutions similar to successful models like the Kingston resolution that protect student security and reduce anxiety on school grounds. Additionally, I want to establish formal resource pathways and workshops that help students from all family backgrounds, including undocumented students, successfully navigate access to higher education.

Q: Describe yourself in three words.
A: Perseverant, Empathetic, Versatile.

Q: Describe M-W in three words.
A: Diverse, Driven, Evolving.

Q: Favorite memory of school (so far)?
A: My favorite memory was photographing our school pep rally for the yearbook club. Being on the bleachers allowed me to see the vibrant school spirit and energy of the entire Monroe-Woodbury High School community and some elementary kids all at once. The most rewarding part was seeing those photographs published in the final yearbook, knowing I helped capture and preserve a moment where our entire student body felt united, joyful, and connected.

Q: What is something that people don’t know about you?
A: While many people know me for my community advocacy and art, they might not know that I have a major technical side! I have completed foundational Cisco cybersecurity coursework, and I regularly spend time at our school's Tech Help Desk replacing broken Chromebook screens and keyboards.

Q: What do you hope your legacy in M-W will be?
A: I hope my legacy will be creating a more inclusive, policy protected school environment where no student feels unsafe or left behind. I want to leave Monroe-Woodbury with a stronger, more transparent framework for student advocacy, ensuring that future generations know their voices genuinely matter to the district.

Anything else you want to add? Thank you!

I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to be considered for this vital position. Serving as the Student Board Representative is a significant commitment, and it is a responsibility I am fully prepared to take on with absolute dedication and accountability. I will work tirelessly to create a lasting, positive impact on our district. I want every student at Monroe-Woodbury to know that no issue is too minor to be brought to my attention. I will give every concern my full attention and advocate non-stop to ensure our student voice drives real, meaningful solutions.
