Dear Sapphire Families,
I’m so excited and truly honored to introduce myself as the new principal of Sapphire Elementary School. From the moment I first walked through the doors, I could feel warmth, energy and a sense of community here that’s hard to put into words, but easy to feel. I’m incredibly grateful to now be part of this amazing school community.
As an educator, I’ve always believed that a strong partnership between families and schools are at the heart of everything we do. Over the past ten years—as a Special Education teacher, instructional leader, and administrator—I’ve learned that students thrive when they feel safe, seen, and supported. That’s the kind of environment I hope to help foster every single day at Sapphire.
One of the most meaningful parts of stepping into this role is that I’m returning to my roots. I grew up here in the Hudson Valley, and it has shaped so much of who I am. I have vivid memories of apple-picking and walking along the trails with my family in the fall. This is the kind of place where neighbors look out for each other, where schools are the heart of the community, and where children can grow up feeling connected and proud of where they’re from. Coming back to serve the community that helped raise me is deeply personal, and something I deeply value.
What drew me to Sapphire specifically is how deeply the staff, students, and families care—not just about learning, but about each other. This is clearly a school where students are encouraged, celebrated, and nurtured for growth. I’m eager to learn more about the traditions that make Sapphire unique and to build on the amazing work already happening here.
On a personal note, one of the things I’m most looking forward to is spending time in classrooms every day, getting to know our students and learning alongside them. I come to Sapphire with a background as a math consultant, and I absolutely love having math conversations with students—whether we’re tackling a problem together, noticing patterns, or finding math in everyday moments. Being with students is the best part of this job, and I can’t wait to share in their curiosity, creativity, and joy for learning.
Throughout the year, I will be hosting opportunities to connect with families . Please stop by—I’d love to hear your stories, your hopes for the year, and what makes Sapphire feel like home to you. I can also be reached by email at aborriello@mw.k12.ny.us or by phone at (845)460-6500. Thank you again for the opportunity to help your children grow. I’m so proud to be part of this community, and I’m ready and excited for the journey ahead.
With gratitude,
Allison Borriello
