Media centers are home to a wealth of material for fun reading, for research and for classwork as well as the digital resources to investigate and explore.  Beyond that, they are comfortable places to be.  Libraries may offer a space for a quiet game of chess, a spot for curling up to read and always, a librarian with helpful suggestions on just the right book.
