Air Quality Update header

Due to ongoing poor air quality resulting from the wildfires in Canada, physical education classes and recess will be held indoors tomorrow, Thursday, June 8.

Air quality readings in our region remain in the 220s, which is considered “Very Unhealthy.” The Department of Health, as well as our district physician, have advised people to remain indoors as much as possible and to avoid strenuous activities.

The New York State Education Department (NYSED) and the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) shared important tips related to air quality:

  • The Air Quality Index (AQI) is available at airnow.gov and describes the current air quality in New York. Note: The AQI in New York is usually excellent, e.g., less than 50. The higher the AQI, the worse the air quality.

  • When AQI is higher, adverse health effects are more likely.

  • Vulnerable individuals, including children under 18, adults 65 and older, and those with cardiovascular disease (e.g., congestive heart failure, history of prior heart attack) or lung disease (e.g., asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), should avoid exposure to the outdoors where Air Quality is designated Unhealthy or worse (AQI greater than 150 https://www.airnow.gov/aqi/aqi-basics/).

  • For those who should or want to reduce their exposure to fine particulate matter when outdoors, masks may be worn. These should be properly fitting and are available at all schools. Please call your child’s nurse or have your child stop at the nurse’s office.

The district will continue to monitor conditions and share information as necessary. Thank you for your ongoing cooperation as we work together to keep our school community safe.
