Monroe-Woodbury Middle School held its first annual Resilience Week during the week of May 16-20. Students examined what it means to be resilient by learning about the Holocaust and the concept of moral courage.

Students participated in the following activities:

● 8th grade students interacted with an exhibit in the MS library on resilience during the Holocaust.
● After viewing the exhibit, 8th grade students attended an assembly with Ms. Julie Golding, an expert on the Kindertransport during the Holocaust.  Kindertransport was an organized rescue effort of children from Nazi-controlled territory that took place during the nine months prior to the outbreak of the Second World War.
● All students in grades 6-8 participated in a workshop on the Holocaust and moral courage during their social studies classes.

As a culminating event, Mr. Alan Moskin, a US Veteran of WWII, served as guest speaker. In 1945, Mr. Moskin's company participated in the liberation of the Gunskirchen Concentration Camp, a subcamp of Mauthausen.

This important student initiative was made possible through the district's partnership with the Holocaust Museum and Center for Tolerance and Education,  and was paid for by the Jewish Federation of Orange County's Zachor Antisemitism Initiative.
